Makalu Base Camp Trek- 20 days

Duration
20 Days
Country
Nepal

The Makalu Base Camp Trek-20 days is an adventurous odyssey for the trekkers seeking rugged adventure in the eastern Nepal Himalayas. This trek will offer a rare combination of unique natural beauty, cultural immersion, and deep solitude, standing in stark contrast to the commercialized routes of Nepal, like the Everest and Annapurna routes.

The ultimate reward of the Makalu Base Camp trek is the staggering proximity to Mount Makalu(8463m). We stand at the base camp, which will be surrounded by a colossal amphitheater of ice and rock. This trail will also provide the unique side views of the Everest and Lhotse. Those views will be less seen or less-photographed views. That will be a great reward from this trek.

The trek is a masterclass in biodiversity. Makalu Barun National Park is a nature’s gift in itself, but the combination of natural and cultural immersion makes it more authentic. We will begin in the humid tropical heat of the Arun Valley and enter the high alpine of Barun Valley. Culturally, the trail will offer a raw look at the Himalayan life. In the villages, Seduwa and Tashi Gaon, we will get to experience the authentic Rai and Sherpa hospitality, where the traditional mountain farming, along with Buddhist customs,s will remain largely untouched by outside influence.

The major distinctive uniqueness of this trek is its uncompromising terrain. In the trek, we cross the Shipton La Pass, which is a rite of passage. We will also cross four passes just to enter the valley that sets us up towards Makalu Base Camp. Unlike the highways of other regions, we will feel this as a true expedition trek. The uniqueness of this trek lies in its silence, as we are more likely to encounter a local yak herder or a rare glimpse of a red panda. The crowd will be almost non-existent; this will be the most definitive choice for the elite adventure-seeker trekker.

Nepal Travel Experiences invites everyone for a guided trek from Kathmandu to Makalu Base Camp and back for 20 days to get the authentic Himalayan experience.

Major Highlights of the trek

  • We will stand at the foot of Mt. Makalu, which is the world’s fifth-highest peak at 8463m.
  • We will witness a breathtaking skyline that features five high peaks, including Everest, Lhotse, Kanchenjunga, and Cho Oyu.
  • We will traverse to an incredible ecological range that starts in lush tropical forests at 500m and ascends to the high-alpine glacier above 5000m.
  • The legendary Shipton La Pass(4210m) and a series of high passes that offer the panorama of 360-degree Himalayan views will be a true sense of high-altitude accomplishment.
  • The pristine beauty of Makalu-Barun National Park will also be an incredible experience to be in.
  • The authentic Ethnic Culture of Rai, Chhetri, Sherpa Communities in the villages like Seduwa and Tashi Gaon will provide us a significant cultural immersion.
  • We will visit the spirituality of Kalo Pokhari and a high-altitude lake adorned with the prayer flags that hold deep reverence.

Why Choose This Trek?

The Makalu Base Camp Trek will offer a rare opportunity to escape the reality of the crowds and immerse ourselves in one of the most pristine areas in Nepal. Makalu Base Camp Trek is a journey of the soul, where we will see power meeting the untouched cultural heritage in one go. This will be an experience of discovery that is increasingly difficult to find in more commercialized routes.

We will have untamed solitude, unlike the bustling commercial trails of Everest.

We will traverse along the Makalu-Barun National Park, which is home to rare wildlife and over 3000 species of flora and fauna.

The landscape transition in this trek is unmatched. We will have a dramatic transition from the world’s deepest Arun Valley to the towering summit of Mt. Makalu.

We will get engaged with the indigenous Rai and Sherpa communities in the remote villages that have retained their cultural heritage.

Best Seasons to Trek Makalu Base Camp

The Radiance of Spring (March to May)

The Makalu Base Camp trek is a high-altitude trek that demands stable weather conditions. Spring is the most stable season in the High Himalayas.

This season, along with spectacular weather conditions, provides the magnificent natural transformation in the Makalu Barun National Park.

As the winter snow slowly fades, the trails will come alive with the most vibrant colours. The blooming of the various species of rhododendrons and wild orchids will bloom.

This season offers moderate temperatures at the lower elevations, making the steep climbs of Tashi Gaon and Seduwa more comfortable.

While some of the high-altitude afternoon clouds are common in the region.

For the nature lovers, this is the perfect time for the resurgence of bird watching and spotting rare Himalayan wildlife emerging from the winter cold. Spring is absolutely recommended for the Makalu Base Camp Trek.

The Clarity of Autumn (September to November)

Autumn is another great season for trekking to Makalu Base Camp. The atmospheric clarity of this region is exceptional.

Following the monsoon rains, the trails come alive with a washed dust and brilliant, sharp, and High-Definition views of Everest, Lhotse, and Makalu. The stable weather with the deep blue skies is crucial for safe navigation of the challenging Shipton La and other high passes.

While the temperatures are cooler than in the spring, the predictable conditions make it the preferred choice for photographers.

The breathtaking sunrises over the granite walls of the Barun Valley will make it the most balanced and reliable seasonal choice. The major Nepali festivals like Dashain and Tihar will also make the trek more vibrant with deep cultural immersion.

Challenges of the Makalu Base Camp Trek

The Makalu Base Camp Trek is one of the formidable challenges in the Himalayas. The extreme isolation and the steep and unrelenting terrain of the Makalu-Barun National Park present a vigorous challenge in the trek.

Trekkers should navigate the significant challenges of altitude gains over a short period of time. Particularly when we cross the grueling Shipton La Pass, the weather conditions become unpredictable and sometimes harsh.

That's why this trek requires high levels of endurance. Our guided trekking package is always there to help you.

Necessary Remedies for Makalu Base Camp Trek

  • Trekker needs to engage in 6-8 weeks of high-intensity cardio and strength training to prepare the muscles for steep climbs.
  • Always follow the strategic acclimatization, as the guide suggests, to adjust to thinning oxygen levels.
  • An experienced local guide from Nepal Travel Experiences will help in understanding the weather patterns and navigate trail changes.
  • The gear selection must be premium to provide ourselves with a good experience.
  • A comprehensive medical kit containing Diamox, along with broad-spectrum antibiotics and hydration salts, helps in an emergency.

Travel Insurance

Travel Insurance is not just recommended but is an absolute necessity for our Makalu Base Camp Trek. We will be crossing Shipton La Pass at 4210m and will be above 3500m for the majority of our trek.

We would want to have a travel policy explicitly extending towards the 5000m undertaking.

While it wouldn’t be dangerous for seasoned trekkers, we must take precautionary measures.

The most critical feature of travel insurance is emergency helicopter evacuation and emergency medical expenses.

In Nepal, that could cost up to 10,000 USD in remote regions. Without comprehensive travel insurance, you could face devastating financial loss during such unforeseen events.

insurance is not only a safety net but is also a friend in need that could save you big bucks. We recommend that you choose a reputed insurer that provides the helicopter evacuations and trekking up to 5000m plans.

Makalu Base Camp Trek- 20 days FAQs

How difficult is the Makalu Base Camp Trek compared to Everest Base Camp?

Makalu is significantly more challenging. While EBC has a well-graded trail, Makalu involves steeper, more rugged terrain, multiple high-altitude passes (like Shipton La), and very basic infrastructure. It requires a higher level of physical stamina and previous trekking experience.

Is a solo trek possible for Makalu Base Camp?

No, since the trail passes through the remote regions of Makalu Barun National Park and remote border areas, the Nepal government doesn't allow a trekker to travel alone or without an authorized guide for safety. The trail is poorly marked, which makes solo travelling dangerous.

What is the "Shipton La" and why is it famous?

Shipton La Pass(4210m) is the highest among the four passes in this trek. This trek was named after Eric Shipton, who was one of the first foreigners to walk through this region.

Are there teahouses available the whole way?

There are teahouses at multiple places, but they are very rustic and primitive. The teahouses will provide very basic rooms and limited food options, and might not even have availability of electricity.

How do I get to the trailhead?

The trek will begin in Tumlingtar. We will take a 40-minute domestic flight from Kathmandu. Because Tumlingtar lies at a low altitude and the region is more prone to fog, the flights might get delayed or canceled.

Is there a mobile network or Wi-Fi on the trail?

Connectivity throughout the trek will be extremely limited. We may get a signal in Tumlingtar and Tashi Gaon. Once we cross the Shipton La into the Barun Valley, we must prepare for digital detox. Satellite phones must be carried to get in touch with the team in Kathmandu.

Can I see Mount Everest from this trek?

Yes. One of the most unique rewards of the Makalu Trek is that we can see the eastern face of Mt. Everest. The Mt. Everest will feature from the ridge of Kauma Danda and several viewpoints near Makalu Base Camp.

What are the specific permit requirements?

You need two main permits: the Makalu-Barun National Park Entry Permit and the Makalu Rural Municipality Trekking Permit. Unlike the Manaslu region, it currently does not require a "Restricted Area Permit" (RAP), but regulations can change, so always check the latest 2026 updates.

How is the water situation on the trail?

There are many glacial streams along the way. Drinking them directly from the source is not a good option; that's why the water must be treated. You should bring high-quality water purification tablets or a portable filter to stay hydrated safely.

What is the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS)?

The risk of Acute Mountain Sickness or altitude sickness during the Makalu Base Camp trek is high because it involves rapid altitude gains. We also have to cross four high passes to reach the valley leading to the base camp. That's why risk is high; to mitigate the risk, we need to have proper acclimatization at Kauma Danda.
