You do not have to do the Everest Base Camp trek specifically to see Mount Everest. There are other choices, like the Gokyo Lakes trek, that also offer jaw-dropping views of Mt. Everest and other 8,000-meter peaks.

The Gokyo Lakes trek perfectly balances busy trails and peaceful strolls. You will have the best of both worlds on this trek. The bustle of Lukla and Namche Bazaar will fill your heart with love, companionship, and contentment.

Likewise, once you leave Namche Bazaar behind, you will enjoy a serene environment. There will be fewer trekkers on the trail. You will have ample time to unwind and rejuvenate. Sceneries get raw and peaceful.

The Gokyo Lakes are the world's highest freshwater lake systems and a Ramsar site. There are 19 Gokyo Lakes spread between 4,700 meters and 5,000 meters, of which 6 are the main lakes.

The Gokyo village is located near the 3rd Gokyo Lake (Dudh Koshi Lake). On the way to Gokyo village, you will walk past the 1st and 2nd Gokyo Lakes. While acclimatizing in Gokyo village, you can hike to the 4th, 5th, and even 6th Gokyo Lakes.

Gokyo Lakes trek itinerary

Upon landing in Lukla, you will ascend following the Dudh Koshi River. The trail goes through rhododendron and magnolia forests, crossing several suspension bridges on the way.

Spend a night in Phakding village and take an acclimatization break in Namche Bazaar. From here onwards, you will trek towards the Gokyo Valley. Cross a landslide area on the way and trek through the Ngozumpa Glacier moraine.

As you enter the high valley, mountains such as Cho Oyu, Makalu, Lhotse, and Everest begin to unfold themselves. You will see many other incredible peaks like Thamserku, Ama Dablam, Nuptse, Cholatse, Island Peak, Baruntse, etc.

After Namche, you spend nights in Dole, Machhermo, and Gokyo villages. The second acclimatization day will be in Gokyo village. You will hike to Gokyo Ri (viewpoint) and visit the 4th, 5th, and 6th Gokyo Lakes. Some trekkers also hike up to the isolated Cho Oyu Base Camp.

Many Gokyo Lakes trek itineraries combine Cho La Pass or Renjo La Pass. We have not included any mountain pass in our Gokyo Lakes trek itinerary. It makes our itinerary doable for both beginner and experienced trekkers.

Major attractions during the Gokyo Lakes trek 13 days

Lukla flight:

The Gokyo Lakes trek 13 days begins with the Lukla flight. Lukla is the gateway to the Everest region. The flight will be short and scenically dramatic.

Namche Bazaar (3,440 m):

Namche Bazaar is a busy Sherpa town. It is known as the economic hub of the Everest region. Here, you will spend two nights acclimatizing, exploring, and mingling with locals and fellow trekkers.

You will hike to Hotel Everest View from here and visit places like the Sherpa Culture Museum and the Everest Photo Gallery. There are also cafes, pubs, and many shops to explore in Namche.

Ngozumpa Glacier: The Biggest Glacier in Nepal

Ngozumpe glacier is the largest glacier in Nepal. It stretches around 36km. The massiveness of this glacier will blow your mind. You will walk through its moraine to reach Gokyo village.

Gokyo Ri (5,357 m):

Gokyo Ri is the highest point you will reach on the Gokyo Lakes trek. It is a viewpoint that offers a breathtaking panorama of Mt. Everest along with a 360° view of three other 8,000m peaks - Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu.

As per the trekkers, the view from Gokyo Ri is way superior to that from Kala Patthar on the EBC tour.

The Gokyo Lakes:

The Gokyo Lakes chain features 19 lakes, and 6 of them are known as the main lakes.

➜ Longpanga Cho (4,690 m): It is the 1st lake.

➜ Taujung Cho (4,740 m): 2nd lake surrounded by dramatic moraine.

➜ Dudh Pokhari (4,790 m): It is the 3rd and most famous lake with vivid turquoise-blue water. Gokyo village sits on the banks of this lake.

Winter (December, January, February):

Trekking in the Himalayas in winter has become much more achievable than ever. Due to global warming, snowfall has drastically reduced. The climate is definitely cold because it is the coldest time of the year, but the trails are not in bad condition.

  • Almost no trekkers in the region. You will enjoy true solitude.

You will follow the main EBC trail till Namche Bazaar. From here, you will follow a separate route that leads to Gokyo Valley. Many trekkers cross Cho La Pass during the Gokyo Lakes trek, but this itinerary does not include the Cho La Pass crossing.

  • Maintain a steady pace throughout the trek. Trekking in the Himalayas is not about reaching the place first. It is about completing the journey.
  • Drink plenty of water. Dehydration is the worst enemy of altitude sickness. In addition, have garlic soup and ginger-honey tea daily. They do wonder about acclimatization.
  • Avoid alcohol and smoking, and have tea/coffee in moderation.
  • Do not pass on the acclimatization hikes. Climbing high and sleeping low is the key to acclimatization.
  • Listen to your body above everything else. You have to push yourself every day during the Gokyo Lakes trek. But do not exhaust yourself unnecessarily. If you feel sick or weird, inform your guide. It could be an early sign of altitude sickness.

You will stay in a mix of lodges and teahouses on the Gokyo Lakes trek. The accommodation will be simple but cozy and comfortable. We book a twin-shared room in our Gokyo Lakes trek package, but you can upgrade to a single room paying a little extra money.

In villages like Lukla, Phakding, and Namche Bazaar, rooms may have a private washroom. But in Dole, Machhermo, and Gokyo Lakes, washrooms are mostly common and made outside the main building.

We try our best to book the best place for a night's stay in all villages. Services like charging, WiFi, and a hot shower come at an additional cost. You can carry backups like a power bank, spare batteries, wet wipes, etc.

Dining rooms are the social area. Here, you can mingle with other trekkers and the locals. Likewise, it is also the warmest place in the lodge. Sleeping rooms are not heated. You may rent an electric blanket for a few bucks. A sleeping bag is highly recommended.

Food and drinking water

You do not have to worry about food and drinking water on the Gokyo Lakes trek. It is readily available throughout the trail. You get a variety of food options in lodges/teahouses.

Likewise, boiled drinking water is available at a fraction of the cost. Carry water purification tablets for backup. In the Gokyo Lakes trek package, you get three meals a day- breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
