Walk the Path of Legends and Superhumans!

The Everest Base Camp trek is the most famous and iconic Himalayan adventure in Nepal. It is one of the greatest mountain journeys that takes you to the heart of the Khumbu region (aka Everest region).

In short, we call it the EBC trek. The journey begins in Kathmandu, where you will experience the lifestyle, culture, and food of the Nepalese people. From Kathmandu, you will travel to Lukla.

The Lukla flight is a very popular part of the Everest Base Camp trek. It is a 30-minute flight that offers amazing aerial panoramas of the Himalayas along with a thrilling landing at the Lukla Airport.

From Lukla, you will trek through the Dudh Koshi Valley and gradually ascend to Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar. It will take you 8 days to reach EBC from Lukla. Kala Patthar is the highest point on the EBC trek.

During the trek, you will spend nights in beautiful Sherpa villages. There are mountain lodges and many service providers all along the Everest Base Camp trail. So, you do not have discomfort, at least in terms of services.

*Everest Base Camp trek package includes basic accommodation. However, if your budget allows, upgrade to mid-range premium lodge or luxury lodges.

The trail goes from subtropical forests to alpine meadows and glacial moraines. You will witness spectacular scenery as you ascend and descend through varying elevations and climatic zones.

Similarly, the frequent encounters of stupas, chortens, prayer wheels, and monasteries on the Everest Base Camp trek route add more color and character to your journey.

What is it like doing the Everest Base Camp trek in 2026?

Every year, the Everest Base Camp trek route is upgrading in many ways. You can start the trek in three ways: by helicopter flight, standard Lukla flight, or by road.

*Yes, you can do the Everest Base Camp trek by road in Nepal. However, it will be a longer itinerary than the standard 14-day trek.

Trekking infrastructure has become incredible on the Everest Base Camp route. There are budget-friendly lodges, mid-range premium lodges, and high-end luxury lodges.

Whether you do a budget Everest Base Camp trek or a luxury Everest Base Camp trek, the natural experience will be deeply authentic. The only difference will be in the service.

The 14-day Everest Base Camp trek is the most followed itinerary. It has two acclimatization days, and the ascent is well-paced. However, you can also customize the Everest Base Camp trek itinerary.

You can extend the Everest Base Camp trek to Gokyo Lakes or combine a mountain pass. Likewise, trekkers who are bound by time can shorten the trek to 12 or 10 days.

Another big thing about the Everest Base Camp trek in 2026 is that you can now enjoy this trek even in the winter season (December to February). Previously, winter was considered an off time for the EBC trek.

Now, winter is becoming one of the most popular times for the Everest Base Camp trek. Due to global warming, snowfall has drastically decreased. Some days have the sharpest visibility of the year.

The climate will be cold but bearable if you dress properly. You will enjoy a peaceful trek, which is not possible in the peak seasons (spring and autumn). Likewise, the Lukla flight price and accommodation rates are also low.

The Everest Base Camp trek attractions

The excitement before the trek begins:

The thought of trekking to Everest Base Camp itself is exciting, and the moment you book the trek, the anticipation increases 10 folds. Your mind will be occupied with nothing but the trek.

The preparation, shopping, and packing will keep you excited. On top of that, sharing the news with your friends and family will fill your heart with a great sense of achievement before you even start.

The landing at Kathmandu Airport:

The big day comes when you fly to Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. Our team will welcome you at Kathmandu's international airport and transfer you to the hotel.

The bustle of Kathmandu and the soothing aroma of incense in its air will make your heart beat faster. In Thamel (the tourist hub of the city), you will see travelers from around the world.

You will gear up for the Everest Base Camp trek in Kathmandu.

The Lukla flight:

We have to dedicate a separate section for the Lukla flight. Lukla is the gateway of the Khumbu region. The Lukla Airport is situated 2,860 meters above sea level.

The airport has one small runway of 527 m (1,729 ft) × 30 m (98 ft) with an 11.7% gradient. Only propeller planes and helicopters fly in and out of this world.

The end of the runway has a deep 700-meter drop, and in front, there are huge hills. This makes taking off and landing at the Lukla Airport quite thrilling and an experience that you will not have at any other airport in the world.

Trail within the Sagarmatha National Park:

The Sagarmatha National Park begins from Monjo village (on the way from Phakding to Namche Bazaar) onwards. You will discover many types of vegetation, flowers, and herbal plants along the trail.

The moment you leave Lukla, the trail descends along the Dudh Koshi River, crossing it several times on the way. You will walk through rhododendron and magnolia forests.

In the mid-hills, you will trek through pine forests and pass by juniper bushes before ascending above the treeline. Then explore alpine meadows, and finally, enter the alpine zone.

Walk through the heart of the Sherpa community:

The Khumbu region has the biggest Sherpa community. In fact, Sherpas are one of the main residents of the Khumbu region. The Everest Base Camp trek route goes through Sherpa villages.

You will spend nights in Lukla, Phakding, Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, Dingboche, Lobuche, and Gorak Shep. All these villages are the main nightstop on the EBC trek route.

Although your time is short in these villages, you still witness the daily lives of the locals, intriguing stories, and a unique culture. Similarly, along the trail, you will discover ancient monasteries and stupas and learn about local Buddhist traditions.

The mountains are constantly present:

You will see the Himalayan mountains from the moment you enter Kathmandu's airspace. During the trek, the views get better and closer.

As you climb higher, mountains like Thamserku, Khumbila, Ama Dablam, Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Pumori, Baruntse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, and many others unfold themselves.

There will be no moment without a mountain on the Everest Base Camp trek.

The challenge of high altitude:

The Everest Base Camp trek is not technically challenging, but the high altitude makes this trek quite demanding. Above 3,500 meters, you will face thin air and low oxygen levels.

The pressure increases on your body. You will get tired easily, and still you have to keep going. It is important that you stay on schedule.

We spend acclimatization days in Namche Bazaar and Dingboche village, which will give you a necessary break, recovery time, and relief from constant altitude gain.

Reaching Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar:

Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar are the highest points of this trek. It will be both emotional and rewarding moments when you reach these two destinations.

At the Everest Base Camp, you will find yourself so close to the tallest mountain in the world, yet still so far. And a hike to Kala Patthar allows you to savor the final jaw-dropping view of Everest before you return.

Day 2

Early morning flight from Kathmandu to Lukla airport and trek to Phakding (2,610 m/8,563 ft)

We leave Kathmandu at around 1:00 AM and drive to Ramechhap Airport. It takes 4-5 hours to reach Ramechhap Airport from Kathmandu.

In spring and autumn, the Lukla flights are transferred to Ramechhap Airport due to high air traffic at Kathmandu Airport.

The flight will be short and scenic. You will see jaw-dropping aerial views of the Himalayan range during the flight. Upon landing in Lukla, you will fetch your luggage and gear up to descend to Phakding village.

Why not spend a night in Lukla:

We do not spend a night in Lukla because of the quick elevation gain while flying from Kathmandu. Phakding village is situated around 200 meters below Lukla.

Spending a night in Phakding is good for acclimatization and lowers the risk of altitude sickness.

Lukla to Phakding route:

The trail descends along the Dudh Koshi River and passes through rhododendron and magnolia forests. On the way, you will trek through small Sherpa villages and cross many suspension bridges.

Standard Lukla flight alternative:

➤ Helicopter flight: Helicopter flights are available between Kathmandu and Lukla. The flight is 45 minutes long, and a window seat is guaranteed. Also, helicopter flights are operated from Kathmandu airport throughout the year.

➤ EBC trek without any flight: If you want to do the Everest Base Camp trek without any domestic flights, you can consider starting the journey from Jiri or Phaplu. A local bus or jeep will bring you to these locations from Kathmandu in 8 to 10 hours. You can start trekking from either of these places. Everest Base Camp trek best time

The Everest Base Camp trek is possible throughout the year. However, the peak trekking seasons are spring and autumn. The weather and climate are much more favorable in peak trekking seasons than in other seasons.

Autumn (September, October, November):

Autumn offers stunning mountain vistas, as there is no dust or pollution. The weather is stable in this season, and the climate is pleasant for long hikes in the mountains.

The temperature ranges between -5 °C and 2 °C. However, the daytime is mostly warm and comfortable. Autumn is also the festival season in Nepal. If you are right on time, you can be part of the biggest Nepalese celebrations of the year.

Spring (March, April, May):

Spring is the season of flowers. Rhododendron and magnolias decorate the lower trails (up to Tengboche village). The visibility, climate, and weather are also excellent in the spring season.

The weather can be a little unstable in the first two weeks of March, but it gets better. Mornings and nights will be cold, but daytime will be warm. The mountain views and scenery are great in spring on the Everest Base Camp trek route.

Winter (December, January, February):

Winter in the Everest region is not like old times anymore. Due to global warming, snowfall has drastically decreased. The stable is not that crazy like before.

There can be delays in Lukla flights, and some days can be gloomy, but overall, you can enjoy an excellent Everest Base Camp trek in winter.

In fact, we get some of the sharpest visibility in the winter season. Make sure you are ready for temperatures below -10°C and have some flexibility in your itinerary.

Summer/monsoon (June, July, August):

The weather challenges are highest in the monsoon period. Frequent rainfall highly affects the Lukla flights. The mountain views are obstructed, and visibility is poor.

Likewise, the trails are slippery and muddy. There are also many leeches. Similarly, the landslide risks also increase significantly during the monsoon time.

On the good note, trails are empty, and the vegetation is thriving. And if you look at rainy landscapes, you will enjoy the trek.

Everest Base Camp trek difficulty

The Everest Base Camp trek difficulty is moderate/challenging. Rugged terrain, steep sections, high altitude, and sustained physical and mental demands of this trek make it challenging.

Due to the Everest Base Camp trek's popularity, it seems like anyone can do this trek. In fact, anyone can do this trek, but there are solid challenges, and those who are well-prepared can only overcome them.

The Everest Base Camp trek is a multi-day hike. You will walk around for 6 hours every day. The trail, elevation, and climate change change every day. So, you have to constantly adjust to a new environment.

Pushing yourself to walk 6 hours a day (around 9 to 11 km) is not mentally easy. You need good endurance and mental ability, and not everyone can do it.

  • Overall difficulty - 6.5 out of 10
  • Altitude challenge - 7 out of 10
  • Physical endurance - 7 out of 10
  • Trail technicality - 5.5 out of 10
  • Remoteness - 6 out of 10
  • Trekking infrastructure - 9 out of 10

Toughest sections on the Everest Base Camp trek route:

The hikes from Phakding to Namche Bazaar: The trail gets steep towards the last two hours of hiking.

Namche Bazaar to Tengboche ascent: The trail sharply drops and steeply ascends to Tengboche.

The high altitude transition to Dingbcohe: You will feel the real effects of high altitude at Dingbcohe village. Even two hours of walking will feel heavy on the body.

Dingboche to Lobuche hike: The terrain is steep and rocky. You will trek along the top of a glacial moraine. Thin air makes every step challenging.

Lobuche to Gorak Shep hike: You not only hike on rocky, steep terrain, but also face low oxygen. Wind and UV rays make the walk more challenging.

Altitude sickness on the Everest Base Camp trek

The Everest Base Camp trek is a high-altitude journey, and most trekkers seem to comprehend the elevation gain they experience on this trek and its effects.

First altitude kick-in comes when you fly from Kathmandu to Lukla. It is over 1,500 meters of gain in elevation in 30 minutes. To balance it, we descend to Phakding village to spend the night.

Likewise, as you ascend to Everest Base Camp, you will experience elevation rise every day. The higher you ascend, the lower the oxygen level gets. It can lead to altitude sickness.

So, we take acclimatization breaks to rest and recover. We have two acclimatization breaks in our Everest Base Camp trek itinerary. Both are on the strategic points and help a lot to adjust to high elevation.

Symptoms of altitude sickness:

  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Loss of appetite
  • Diziness
  • Difficulty in sleeping
  • Mild shortness of breath

Altitude sickness preventive measures:

  • Do not miss the acclimatization hike.
  • Take short breaks to catch breath and hydrate.
  • Walk slowly. Do not rush. Maintain a steady pace.
  • Keep yourself hydrated.
  • Avoid alcohol and smoking.
  • Have garlic soup and ginger-honey tea daily.
  • Eat well. Include carbohydrates like rice, noodles, potatoes, etc in your meals, especially lunch.
  • Get ample rest daily. Try to sleep at least 8-9 hours. Carry earbuds to reduce noise in the lodge.
  • Listen to your body and inform your guide if you feel any distress.

Travel insurance requirements for the Everest Base Camp trek

Many Nepali trekking agencies compulsorily require travel insurance with emergency helicopter evacuation coverage for the Everest Base Camp trek. But with us, you can do the EBC trek without travel insurance.

Is it fine to do the Everest Base Camp trek without travel insurance? Well, it depends on how well you are prepared, your knowledge and understanding of the Himalayan trail, and your support team (guide and porter).

If you can, we highly recommend getting travel insurance for this trek, as it will save you a lot of money in times of crisis. However, if you are confident about trekking without travel insurance, we are fine with that too.

*Note that if any emergency occurs during the trek, you will be responsible for all the additional expenses.

Guide and porter

Trekking with a Nepali guide and a porter enhances the trip and takes it to the next level. You get help in navigation, acclimatization, luggage, and deeper insight into the region.

With a guide and a porter, you will enjoy a more relaxed trek (at the very least you do not have to worry about finding the right trail, locating accommodation, negotiating better room and service, etc).

You can concentrate on enjoying the trek and the views. We also love how guides and porters make the trek a little less serious and stressful with their funny jokes and friendly attitude.

Our Everest Base Camp trek package is inclusive of both guide and porter. We get your professional mountain guide and a local porter.

➜ Porter weight limit: Our one porter carries duffel bags of two trekkers, and the weight limit is 8-9 kg per trekker.

➜ Tip for guide and porter: You are expected to tip the guide and porter after the trek completes. You can tip whatever amount you wish. It is the best way to say thank you to your guide and porter.
